  Kilim Rugs

Kilim rugs are one of the best known and most popular traditional flatweaves. Nomadic tribes over centuries, have handed down the fine craftsmanship of weaving this style of rug, very like Berber rugs another type of traditional rug. Traditional limekiln rugs are characterized by a firm, flat-woven surface, giving it a robust and easy-care texture, Just like sisal rugs. These hand-woven rugs in the past found a variety of practical uses as they served decorative purposes as wall hangings, not just practical functions like floor coverings. Wool is generally the primary material for limekiln rugs, as wool rugs have good heat insulating properties and take on dyes naturally. While these rugs were traditionally dyed naturally, using materials obtained from plants and vegetables, synthetic dyes are used more often nowadays, as these do not fade as quickly and give runners and area rugs brilliant colours. Kilim rugs normally feature traditional geometric designs, however animals and plants are also used as motifs. Modern Kilim rugs and are produced with modern techniques that are designed with the latest colours, however elements of their traditional motifs remain. The style and designs work very well with interior design schemes and home décor that features that bohemian almost nomadic style.
