Kirkby Design Underground Vol.III Fabrics
Underground Vol.III marks the third chapter in Kirkby Design's celebrated collaboration with Transport for London, reinterpreting eight archival moquette designs into sophisticated upholstery velvets. Drawing on patterns originally commissioned for London's transport network from the early 20th century onwards, the collection honours figures such as Marion Dorn and Marianne Straub, whose textiles became integral to the city's visual identity. The geometric heritage of Bakerloo is revitalised through plush velvet construction, offering depth and contemporary clarity. Eden channels Art Deco houndstooth references with a refined small-scale interpretation, while Piccadilly explores fragmented geometry in cut and uncut velvet for a layered, tactile effect. Richly historical yet decisively modern, these upholstery fabrics bridge heritage and innovation. Through scale adjustments and nuanced recolouring, Kirkby elevates archival public transport design into bold statement textiles suitable for contemporary interiors, ensuring that London's transport legacy continues to inspire with elegance, texture and enduring cultural relevance.
